Apple Unit and Applesauce Recipe

One of my memories in elementary school was our apple
unit. We made a book full of recipes that was nothing but apples!! I
have been waiting for this unit for awhile now.  We started
the week with labeling an apple..

We watched a nifty little video about Johnny Appleseed. KK
loved this. It had a few questions at the end that she was able to answer.

And of course she needed a pot that looked like Johnny Appleseed.

We had to make note of her favorite apple.

She likes red apples :)
And last but not least, homemade applesauce!
Can we get a whoot whoot for homemade applesauce?

Here is the recipe for this delicious flavor.

Ingredients:

6 apples, I hear Gala apples are good but I had Granny
Smith on hand from last week's apple pie, so we used those
1/2 cup water
1tsp -  1tbs. cinnamon- the more cinnamon you use the darker it will be
1tsp. sugar-we used  organic sugar but regular sugar would be good too
1/2 tsp. vanilla
and a crock pot

Start with your delicious apples

Peel your apples

Core your apples

Now cut them into pieces

You could probably skip this step but it kept those little
hands busy for just a little bit longer so we cut them into
small pieces.

Mix your water, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla.  After that is all mixed
up pour your mixture over the apples in your crock pot.

Cook on low for 4 hours or until the apples are soft.
When the apple are soft you can either mush them which will give
you a chunkier applesauec or you can
mix the apples with a hand mixer which will give you a
creamier applesauce.  We opted for the creamier
one. I figured if it didn't look like the store kind then KK wouldn't eat
it.  Enjoy you delicious, healthy applesauce.

In the fridge- store for 4-5 days
In the freezer- store for several months
